Anne Mead

Assistant Director

Anne and her husband, Stephen Mead, serve as Green River Preserve’s Assistant Directors as well as Directors of S.E.E. (School of Environmental Education) and Green River Preserve Expeditions. Anne and Stephen also oversee the Green River Preserve farm program, land and forestry stewardship programs, and various other administrative duties in the camp.
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a life-long camper, Anne found her calling and love of the outdoors early on in life! Her desire to be outside and learn from her surroundings led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in forestry and geology from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Shortly after graduating, she headed out west to the Teton Science School in Kelly, Wyoming and completed a year of graduate work in ecology, place-based and environmental education. Anne spent the next five years exploring various places and communities and culminating these adventures with a Masters in community development, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education from the University of Idaho. Upon graduation, her graduate thesis project of developing a farm and garden curriculum for schools was adopted by the Idaho school system and integrated into their elementary school curriculum. The following year the Jackson Hole, Wyoming school system asked to adopt her curriculum. Anne has worked at Green River over the years at summer camp, expeditions, and the school programs as a counselor, expedition leader, mentor, and program director. Anne’s related camp experiences include working as a counselor and program assistant at Camp Ton-A-Wandah in North Carolina, an expedition leader for Wilderness Ventures and an environmental educator and expedition leader for the Teton Science School. Prior to returning home to GRP, Anne was the Director of Education for the Mountain Studies Institute in Silverton, Colorado. Anne and her husband, Steve, are both actively engaged in the American Camp Association and The North Carolina Youth Camp Association. When Anne is not working, she can be found trail running, paddling, cycling, or backcountry skiing with her husband Steve, their son, Phen, and golden retriever, Irie Bird!
