Blue Ridge Expeditions: Session 2, Update 1
By Sandy Schenck
Opening day went well for the new group of expeditioners. Soon after their arrival they participated in some orientation activities at their base camp at Reasonover. And just like at base camp for the younger campers, they did a respect circle where they are asked to make a commitment to respect themselves and each other during the time they are together.
Monday was a busy day where they learned about low impact camping, the importance of leaving no trace while on the trails, first aid and other skills. After lunch they enjoyed an exploratory hike around base camp. The day ended with dinner and storytelling around the campfire.
On Tuesday, after an early breakfast, the group headed out to Lake Julia to canoe and do some fly-fishing. They then came back to prepare a “wild food” dinner which included edible plants found around Reasonover and fish caught earlier in the day. Afterwards the expeditioners were given the opportunity to discuss and plan their backpacking trip. Today they are doing more planning, packing for the trip and then heading out to Pisgah National Forest to camp.
