GRP 2011 Summer Staff
By Sandy Schenck
We will update this page as the bios and photos come in.
After spending a summer working and jumping off of waterfalls in Wales UK, Cat is ready to jump back into another summer at GRP! Once upon a time a counselor in 2009, she’ll be returning this year as a mentor. Cat is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Recreation Management and a Biology minor. Cat is excited about telling epic bug tales, playing mystical melodies on the ocarina, and smelling like campfires. Most of all, she’s honored to have the privilege of spending another summer with the best campers in the universe.
Elan will be returning to GRP for her fifth summer on staff. After spending the past two years trekking around the swamps of the Everglades working as project coordinator for an environmental education program based in the Big Cypress Swamp of Florida, Elan is ready for higher elevation! Elan is thrilled to have the opportunity to share her passion for the natural world and to be a part of such an amazing community!
Caroline is returning to GRP for her fifth summer as a staff member and eleventh summer altogether. Originally from Columbia, SC, Caroline has recently graduated from Princeton University with a degree in History and a teaching certificate in secondary English. She loves reading, writing, playing outside, and all things camp. The Preserve is one of her favorite places in the world, and she is thrilled to be exploring the property all summer!
BEN “BENTOR” WYRICK
Ben teaches photography and graphic design at Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia. The only thing he loves more than talking about Native American tipis is howling with his dog, Dante. 2011 will be Bentor’s tenth summer at the Preserve and he is honored to finally be worth four figures in Staff Hunt. Bentor has hiked the Appalachian Trail, bicycled the Blue Ridge Parkway, finished the Boston Marathon, and loves to brag in the third person.
Jon has been facilitating groups for nearly twenty years in a wide variety of settings. He holds a BS in Economics and a Masters of Social Work. His professional experience includes leading wilderness expedition programs with incarcerated male teenagers, founding and directing an experiential education organization, facilitating nature awareness programs for schools, leading naturalist and expedition programs for summer camps and facilitating high ropes and group challenge courses for adults and corporate groups. This diverse work experience has enabled Jon to develop an adaptive, flexible and effective style of genuinely connecting with a wide variety of group populations. Included in this repertoire are drumming, storytelling, primitive living skills, nature awareness activities, wilderness immersion experiences, vision quests and ritual.
Rich is half-man, half-amazing, and one third unicorn. Although Green River Preserve asked him to be an exhibit at the new cord-wood cottage this summer, Rich has opted to take the more traditional route and become a mentor. Some skeptics say this is the more boring lifestyle and job choice, Rich, however believes that as a mentor he can bring an abundance of joy to the children of GRP while using a multitude of different talents—some of the most prominent being the ability to dance on rainbows, never EVER having ort, capturing the flag, and eating every single animal in “predator prey”. On hikes this summer, he will focus on catching the elusive venomous tree walrus, fishing and stream ecology with Leroy the River Otter, and beating the bludgeon with Fred and George Weasley on the Quidditch pitch. Rich cannot wait for the campers to get here for a truly magical summer.
Caleb is a rising Junior at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, where he majors in Civil Engineering while on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship. He claims Shreveport, La and Naples, Italy as his “hometowns.” Caleb’s younger sister, Sophia (9) will be a second year camper at GRP and was the one who convinced Caleb to apply for a counselor position. Caleb enjoys all things outdoors including backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, canoeing, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing to class during Vermont winters! Caleb also enjoys teaching kids; one of his favorite jobs in high school was working in a children’s cooking school. In his “spare” time, Caleb plays the drums for the Norwich Drum and Pipe Band and is known for his ironing board grilled cheese sandwiches. Caleb loves the mountains of North Carolina and is very excited about being a part of GRP!
Kirsten, who is from Arizona, is currently a sophomore at Arizona State University studying both Sociology and English while working at an amazing bakery here in Tempe. When she is not in class or at work you will find her at their local rock climbing gym or a small coffee shop writing away. She is the second oldest of five, second only to her twin sister and a brother who is only a year behind them. She has lived in Arizona her whole life and is extremely excited to beat the heat this summer out in North Carolina. She is sure she will stick out for a bit, perhaps wearing jackets in 70 degree weather? However, she is also sure she will fit in (literally she is 5’2) and cannot wait to meet all the campers at Green River!

If you ask nicely, he’ll show you where that is on his handy map of Michigan (get it? – handy? – Michigan is shaped like a hand….oh nevermind).
