OBX 3 - 1st Update

By Sandy Schenck

OBX 3 is off to a great start! Expeditioners learned kayaking skills on the Lakes and then proceeded to paddle down the White Oak River observing the ecological transition from fresh to salt water. They spent some time at their campsite in Stella playing volleyball and relaxing. Afterwards, they visited Beaufort, NC. The third oldest town in NC celebrating its 300th year! Keith Rittmaster, biologist with NC Maritime Museum, met them to discuss his Sperm Whale project (ask them about it when they get home!) and his dolphin research. The expeditioners will spend time with Keith once they are out on the Banks as he meets them for a day of surfing and marine ecology. The next step after Beaufort was to leave civilization and launch their kayaks into the ocean and head for the Barrier Islands that compose the Outer Banks. First stop is Shackleford Island home to wild horses! They will continue kayaking along Shackleford toward the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. View Slide Show.
