Outer Banks Expeditions: Session 1, Update 1
By Sandy Schenck
Welcomes and introductions were made on opening day at Shell Point and then they took a trip to the Cape Lookout Visitor Center. Afterwards, they traveled to their campground and just like at base camp, they did the respect circle where the expeditioners and staff agree to respect themselves, each other and all living things. After dinner at opening campfire they talked about the Woodcraft Laws, sang Sister, Brother and soon after went to bed.
Saturday the expeditioners learned some important kayaking skills such as strokes and wet exits then they used their skills at the nearby lake. After lunch, they learned about primitive camping and then packed for the river trip.
Sunday they paddled to Long Point which was their next camp location. After lunch the expeditioners did some black water paddling (about five miles) and did more at dusk.
This morning they had lunch on the river, planned menus and had some free time to swim. This evening they’ll talk about expectations for the paddle trip and any challenges and/or fears they may have.
(Photo cards will be mailed in twice per session. Once we receive them, we’ll upload the photos.)
