Session 2 Day 16; Mini Session Day 1

By Sandy Schenck

We had a terrific Opening Day with our Mini Session campers! Campers arrived bright and early and got settled into their cabins, making up their beds and meeting their cabin-mates. Then they went on a tour of camp; they also played some games and learned some songs. After a yummy lunch of pizza and salad, we all met at the Gazebo for the Respect Circle, which is a GRP tradition. Sandy and Missy talk about what the Green River Preserve means to them, and we all agree to respect one another and the other living things in our community for the time that we are at the GRP. Campers then headed to the swim lake for the swim review. Then they got to sign up for activities; their choices include climbing, crafts, canoeing, BB Skeet, gardening, and stream exploration. After dinner tonight, they headed to the Upper Council Fire, another GRP tradition. We opened the campfire by reading the Woodcraft Laws (our code of behavior, based on valuing Beauty, Truth, Fortitude, and Love). We heard more readings and sang some songs, and then we finished with a story from Bob, one of our staff’s best storytellers. Tomorrow our Mini Session campers will go on their first mentor hikes and will begin taking activities; we’ll report back later tomorrow with more details!

Our Session 2 campers had another great day of hiking and having fun today. They hiked into DuPont State Forest, went swimming, had a picnic lunch, saw some deer and some cool snakes; when they got back, after getting cleaned up and eating dinner, they turned the Lodge into a coffeehouse with an “open mike night,” with some campers at tables playing games, others taking turns singing, and others just hanging out and chatting with each other. This next week, our Session 2 campers will be participating in GLP’s and in service projects, as well as some other special events. We’ll be keeping you posted.
