Super Start! (Base Camp Session 6, July 19)
By Sandy Schenck
We are off and running in Session 6 at Base Camp! After campers’ families got them checked in and settled in, they said their goodbye’s; then campers took a tour of camp with their cabins, stopping by the Lodge on their way to set tables for lunch. After their tour, campers came to lunch, and at lunch, we found out that on their tour, Fireside 1 saw a deer in the East Field! We think this is the earliest we have ever seen a Grand Slam animal at the Green River Preserve; when campers and staff have seen a turkey, a bear, a deer, and a venomous snake, all in one session, that’s a Grand Slam, and we celebrate with an ice cream party and a fireworks display. We are off to a super start!
After lunch, we headed down to the Gazebo for the Respect Circle, a long-standing tradition at the GRP. We talk about the founding of the GRP and the basic values on which our community is based—respect for ourselves, for each other, and for every living thing—and we are all given the opportunity to agree to respect these things—“I will!” After the Respect Circle, campers learned about what afternoon activities they might take in the next two weeks. These range from archery and BB Skeet to dance and creative writing. Then we all head to the swim lake, to go over waterfront procedures and for every camper to go through their swim review.
Then, finally!, it’s time for dinner—fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans (potatoes and beans fresh from our farm!), salad bar, rolls, and chocolate cake for dessert (and we always have vegetarian options and pb & j available, too)—everyone is hungry, so dinner couldn’t come soon enough. After refueling at dinner, campers and staff enjoyed a giant game of Capture the Flag—a camp favorite.
Now everyone is back in cabins, getting ready for bed—we have enjoyed seeing returning faces and meeting new ones today! and we look forward to these next two weeks. If you would like to see some pictures from today, you’ll find a link here; we don’t have all the cabin pictures yet, but we’re working on that. We’ll keep you posted with more updates and pictures as the days go by!
