Turkey and Ruffed Grouse active this Spring
By Sandy Schenck
This morning on the Bear Trail I saw three large turkeys. A little later and further down the trail I heard a ruffed grouse drumming.
Ruffed grouse may drum in any month of the year and at any time of the day or night, but the drumming usually starts in early March, peaks in April and tapers off at the end of May. The drumming serves the dual purpose of proclaiming the male’s territory and his determination to defend it, and as an attractant to bring females to the area for breeding.
