BRX 3: Life is AWESOME!

BRX 3 is awesome! There is no better way to sum it up. This group of expeditioners has had a blast. They returned Tuesday morning after a fantastic backpacking trip on the foothills trail. The terrain was extremely pleasant, lots of rolling ups and downs and not too many steep sections. The best meals while backpacking were chicken Alfredo and stir fry! Yum yum!

Wednesday and Thursday Stephen and I had the pleasure of taking the group canoeing on the river. Wednesday was spent on a section of the French Broad, learning basic strokes and getting used to the feeling of moving water. We saw multiple blue herons, an otter, a couple of cows, and a hawk being chased by a group of crows. Everyone had a great time and showed lots of improvement throughout the day.

Thursday, all of our practicing from the day before paid off with a fast and challenging experience on the lower green river. This section of river has a combination of class II and III rapids. Expeditioners took the plunge, and eagerly ventured on this 6 mile stretch with lots of smiles and even more laughs. Overall, everyone did amazingly! They cheered each other on, learned how to push their limits with a canoe mate, and conquered the lower green!

Friday the crew will spend the day at Reasonover base camp having an awareness day and preparing for their final day with the sweat lodge. Everyone is excited to sleep in a little and take it easy after a busy, fun filled week. Here are a couple of pictures from their backpacking trip. ENJOY!

Expeditions Update: No news is GOOD news!

Both OBX and BRX expeditioners are out and about on their extended trips.

Outer banks-ers are experiencing “Island Life!” Paddling from shore to shore, meandering with wild horses, sea shell hunting, sand beach cooking, siesta lounging, salt water swimming. Life is good. They spent Sunday night at Whale Creek and will spend tonight at Johnson’s Bay, both on Shakleford Island. Tomorrow they will make their way across the sound to Cape Lookout National Seashore.

BRX expeditioners have been venturing on the Foothills Trail, just south of us in South Carolina. This is part of an 80 mile trail running along the Blue Ridge escarpment, the area where the mountains end and the piedmont begins. In addition to a lot of insanely amazing geology, the crew has been experiencing some tough climbs, incredible outlooks, beautiful floral and fauna, and amazing community. Expeditioners will conclude their trip tomorrow and take out at Lake Jocassee.

BRX 3: Llamas, Waterfalls, and Trip Planning

BRX 3 is in full swing. Campers have spent the first couple of days settling into Reasonover base camp, getting to know one another, planning their backpacking trip, and taking adventures to Big Bradley Falls in Saluda, NC and Hooker Falls in Dupont State Forest.

Tuesday the group ventured to Dupont State Forest to explore the gorgeous Hooker and Triple Falls sights. An unexpected creature greeted them in the parking lot: LlAMAS! That’s right…Llamas. A llama outfitter was posted in the parking lot waiting for a “pack-out” trip. He was eager to see our expeditioners and invited them to pet and meet his animals. After getting to know one another for a few minutes, the outfitter engaged the group in some Llama races in the parking lot. The expeditioners jumped on this opportunity and quickly demonstrated that they were “lama worthy” with their team-working skills. As you might expect, no other expeditioners have had the pleasure of enjoying such an activity in a mere parking lot! After their time in the parking lot with the lamas, the crew hiked to the falls, played in the water, and many became polar bears for the summer season.

Wednesday was spent at Big Bradley Falls near Saluda, NC climbing and swimming. Stephen and Evan, our climbing experts, set the expeditioners up with 4 different climbs varying in difficulty. Each person had the chance to challenge themselves on the surface rock, and many were successful in reaching personal goals. After a morning of climbing and a picnic lunch, the team turned their attention to the beautiful waterfall and river immediately next to the climbing site. Expeditioners were eager to swim, relax, and test out the bouldering site which could only be accessed from the water. After fulfilling their aquatic needs, the group hiked out of the gorge and headed back to their home, Reasonover base camp.

Today, the crew is planning, packing, and preparing for their backpacking trip. The expeditioners were presented with 3 different options.  After discussing the options, the group consensus will determine where they will be going for the next 4-5 days. We will be sure to keep you posted on the trip and the details! The weather has been beautiful and looks good for the weekend as well!

Expeditions Update: TBX, OBX, BRX

TBX: The crew will be arriving back this afternoon after their final week of exploration. TBX’ers spent the beginning of the week hiking in the Nantahala Forest. Days were filled with 10 plus mile hikes and lots of swimming! Reports included lots of laughs, lots of good food, and lots of beautiful sights to see! Thursday morning they moved towards the Chattooga River to raft sections 3 and 4 with the NOC. This is a super exciting part of the river filled with class 3 and 4 white water rapids. With all the rain we have been getting in the southeast, the river was likely to be extremely lively! Expeditioners will return tonight to GRP base camp and have a closing dinner and ceremony. Tomorrow……they will have to leave their summer home. We are so thankful to have had such an amazing first group of Trail Blazing Expeditioners!

OBX: Outer Banks Expeditioners made it safely to Shackelford Island yesterday. They spent the night at Whale Creek campsite and enjoyed a lovely afternoon of siesta time, beach time, and maritime exploration time! They also had the pleasure of watching the wild horses that inhabit Shackelford. This morning they launched early to paddle up the island to camp at Johnson’s Bay. Tomorrow they will cross the inlet and paddle to Cape Lookout, where they will spend the next 2 nights. The leaders report that the group is doing wonderfully and really enjoying their time out on the banks. The only real complaint….is the heat. But….thankfully- they have the ocean to cool off in and some cooler temperatures headed their way!

BRX: Blue Ridge Expeditioners have returned happy and wet from their backpacking trip in Pisgah. Expeditioners had a fabulous time hiking on the Art Loeb Trail and seeing the sights of the southern Appalachians despite their daily dose of rain. They celebrated last night with a pizza party and plan to spend today drying out and preparing for their next adventures….white water canoeing and rock climbing!

BRX2: Out on the Trail

BRX2 kicked off Saturday with an awesome group of expeditioners! Everyone arrived and immediately got settled into their base camp at Reasonover. Basic skills and group tasks were reviewed and a GRP respect circle defined the opening night.

Sunday was spent peering over maps and routes and determining the backpacking plan for the week. The group decided to hike in Pisgah National Forest and tackle the “Art Loeb” and a portion of the “Mountains to Sea” trail. Expeditioners wasted no time on their planning! They picked a route, packed their bags, and departed early Monday morning for a 7 day adventure! Whoot! Whoot!

We spoke with Kaitlyn Varnot, one of the leaders, last night and she reported everyone was happy, healthy, and safe. They had a great first day, trudging uphill and mostly on ridge lines viewing the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains. The group got rained on a bit but nothing they could not handle. Everyone was in good spirits and was happy to be sleeping outside with the stars.

BRX 1: Back from Pisgah, Safe and Happy

Expeditioners returned from their backpacking trip Sunday afternoon. They had a fabulous time exploring Pisgah Forest for 4 days. BRX’ers woke Sunday morning early to do a sunrise hike to Sam’s Knob. Expeditioners claim this was one of the highlights of the trip thus far. Campers were greeted back at Reasonover base camp with a brunch spread- quiche, watermelon, hash browns, sausage and more! A well deserved delicious meal after burning many calories in the backcountry.

Monday was spent exploring waterfalls in Dupont State Forest. Expeditioners went swimming and enjoyed the relief of no longer carrying a large backpack! Tomorrow they plan to hit the French Broad River and test out their paddling skills. It is sure to be a fantastic adventure!

BRX 1: Words from the Trail

The BRX crew is in the middle of four days hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Expeditioners had an early departure on Thursday, and had great days on the trail both Thursday and Friday.  They had some rain, a little thunder but nothing major as far as thunderstorms go.  Today they set off for Sam Knob over 6,000 feet in elevation.

BRX 1: First Days

Sunday morning 12 high school students came together with 4 leaders. Some knew each other, some didn’t. It did not seem to matter, though. They all shared the same thing- a feeling of excitement, and utter joy for their upcoming expedition adventure! Yes- that’s right folks, BRX 1 2012 has kicked off and the team is phenomenal.

The group gathered at base camp for drop off, quickly said goodbye to parental guardians, and jumped right into group games and initiatives. Once learning everyone’s names, they struck out for the BRX base camp also known as Reasonover. Expeditioners spent the first afternoon and evening settling into their new home and creating the foundation for their community. Like all GRP sessions, BRX opens with a respect circle. In addition, expeditioners establish “group norms” or guidelines to follow while living in a communal environment.

Monday, expeditioners broke up into 2 groups and set out to explore the Reasonover land. One group spent the majority of their time tracking. They saw bear prints, deer nests, and tons of scat. They also ventured to the old gold mine around Reasonover and visited the bog area. The other group took off on a creek hike. Their adventure was filled with lots of fungus, wildflowers, an abandoned moonshine still, and many teachable moments. The evening was spent carving wooden spoons around the fire and getting to know one another.

Tuesday, the expedition ventured on their first out of camp trip to go climbing at Big Bradley Falls in the Saluda, NC area. The group met climbing coordinator, Evan Townsend, and Expedition Director, Stephen Mead, for a fun filled day. Expeditioners had to rappel down into the gorge to even access the additional climbs set up. Each expeditioner tried at least one climb and many multiple climbs. Expeditioner Jaya exclaimed, “I feel soooo accomplished!”All in all is was an awesome day.

Tomorrow, the expeditioners will begin preparing for their backpacking trip! The fun just doesn’t stop!

BRX 2 Now Open to Rising 9th Graders

Our other expeditions are full or almost full but BRX 2 (June 29 – July 16, 2010) still has spaces. In an effort to provide more room for campers who want to go on an expedition, we are opening BRX 2 to rising 9th graders.

This expedition is filled with creating your own community, developing leadership skills and taking care of each other while hiking, backpacking, canoeing, rock waterfallphotoclimbing and more! Also, participants design and plan part of the session schedule themselves.

Scholarship are available upon request so fill out an application today! We would love to see you back at GRP on this exciting expedition.

From BRX Expeditioners:

The two weeks spent here were truly some of the most exciting, educational, fun and overall amazing weeks I have ever spent. The mountains were beautiful; the community we formed was tight.

My favorite thing is the wonderful sense of community that is created at BRX. Other things I loved were the backpacking adventure in the Black Mountains. I will never forget walking through the clouds. My least favorite thing was that it had to end because I really loved every second of this trip.

I would just like to thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to come to this amazing place and really discover who I am. This was truly an experience of a lifetime.

BRX Session 1 – Photos from 6/12 and 6/13

Expeditions arrived on Friday and hiked out to their Reasonover Base Camp. They Explored the territory and got to know each other over a muddy game of Kung-Fu. Saturday was spent trying out hammocks and making wooden forks from branches, fire by friction, and gourd canteens.
