A Great Summer Staff!

The 2011 GRP Summer Staff is exciting! Visit the summer staff bio page to read more about them. Their diversity is amazing and GRP is so fortunate to have this group of bright, creative, and curious young people who have a genuine love for nature.

On board for the summer are: 32 counselors (2 in each cabin this summer!), 18 co-counselors (cocos – 9 each session), 10 mentor naturalists, 6 mentor activity coordinators and a total of 9 nurses throughout the summer. Whew! That’s quite a group and all for 102 campers per session – an amazing camper to staff ratio!

Staff training begins on May 25th. It is a time for all of the GRP staff to learn and play together, build a cohesive family, and create a wonderful community for the summer of 2011. All of the staff is looking forward to your camper’s arrival. See you soon!!!

GRP 2011 Summer Staff

We will update this page as the bios and photos come in.

MENTORS

CAT BLOODWELL

catbloodwellAfter spending a summer working and jumping off of waterfalls in Wales UK, Cat is ready to jump back into another summer at GRP! Once upon a time a counselor in 2009, she’ll be returning this year as a mentor. Cat is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Recreation Management and a Biology minor. Cat is excited about telling epic bug tales, playing mystical melodies on the ocarina, and smelling like campfires. Most of all, she’s honored to have the privilege of spending another summer with the best campers in the universe.

ELAN SOLVESON

elansolveson_mugElan will be returning to GRP for her fifth summer on staff. After spending the past two years trekking around the swamps of the Everglades working as project coordinator for an environmental education program based in the Big Cypress Swamp of Florida, Elan is ready for higher elevation! Elan is thrilled to have the opportunity to share her passion for the natural world and to be a part of such an amazing community!

CAROLINE ELLERBE

carolineellerbe_mugCaroline is returning to GRP for her fifth summer as a staff member and eleventh summer altogether.  Originally from Columbia, SC, Caroline has recently graduated from Princeton University with a degree in History and a teaching certificate in secondary English.  She loves reading, writing, playing outside, and all things camp.  The Preserve is one of her favorite places in the world, and she is thrilled to be exploring the property all summer!

BEN “BENTOR” WYRICK

benwyrick_mugBen teaches photography and graphic design at Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia. The only thing he loves more than talking about Native American tipis is howling with his dog, Dante. 2011 will be Bentor’s tenth summer at the Preserve and he is honored to finally be worth four figures in Staff Hunt. Bentor has hiked the Appalachian Trail, bicycled the Blue Ridge Parkway, finished the Boston Marathon, and loves to brag in the third person.

JON ROUSSEAU

jonrousseau_mugJon has been facilitating groups for nearly twenty years in a wide variety of settings. He holds a BS in Economics and a Masters of Social Work. His professional experience includes leading wilderness expedition programs with incarcerated male teenagers, founding and directing an experiential education organization, facilitating nature awareness programs for schools, leading naturalist and expedition programs for summer camps and facilitating high ropes and group challenge courses for adults and corporate groups. This diverse work experience has enabled Jon to develop an adaptive, flexible and effective style of genuinely connecting with a wide variety of group populations. Included in this repertoire are drumming, storytelling, primitive living skills, nature awareness activities, wilderness immersion experiences, vision quests and ritual.

RICH PREYER

richpreyer_mugRich is half-man, half-amazing, and one third unicorn. Although Green River Preserve asked him to be an exhibit at the new cord-wood cottage this summer, Rich has opted to take the more traditional route and become a mentor. Some skeptics say this is the more boring lifestyle and job choice, Rich, however believes that as a mentor he can bring an abundance of joy to the children of GRP while using a multitude of different talents–some of the most prominent being the ability to dance on rainbows, never EVER having ort, capturing the flag, and eating every single animal in "predator prey". On hikes this summer, he will focus on catching the elusive venomous tree walrus, fishing and stream ecology with Leroy the River Otter, and beating the bludgeon with Fred and George Weasley on the Quidditch pitch. Rich cannot wait for the campers to get here for a truly magical summer.

CALEB BEASLEY

calebbeasley_mugCaleb is a rising Junior at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, where he majors in Civil Engineering while on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship. Caleb also enjoys teaching kids; one of his favorite jobs in high school was working in a children’s cooking school. In his “spare” time, Caleb plays the drums for the Norwich Drum and Pipe Band and is known for his ironing board grilled cheese sandwiches. Caleb loves the mountains of North Carolina and is very excited about being a part of GRP!

KIRSTEN FREEH

kirstenfreeh_mugKirsten, who is from Arizona, is currently a sophomore at Arizona State University studying both Sociology and English while working at an amazing bakery here in Tempe. She is the second oldest of five, second only to her twin sister and a brother who is only a year behind them. She has lived in Arizona her whole life and is extremely excited to beat the heat this summer out in North Carolina. She is sure she will stick out for a bit, perhaps wearing jackets in 70 degree weather? However, she is also sure she will fit in (literally she is 5’2) and cannot wait to meet all the campers at Green River!

In public you can see him playing guitar or promoting flannel. If left alone for too long, he might be caught reading under a tree, watching nature documentaries, or editing friends’ papers for fun. He cannot wait to be out of the library and into the woods with his favorite people in the world!

Sustainability, Green River Preserve, and the Educational Benefits of Summer Camp: Part V

Personal character is a true measure of who we are.  In his book, Cowboy Ethics, Jim Owen, says that there is a real hunger today in America for an anchor; a back to basics living, when life was simpler and people kept their word.   Today the road to the top is often met with lying, cheating, and stealing.  Rules are bent to work the system.  Children are learning from these role models that these standards are acceptable. The moral compass of America has lost direction and there is a real cry for a solid belief system.   People long for TRUST.

Tradition plays a big part in shaping the focus of the Green River Preserve and helps to keep us grounded in the belief that we can learn and grow as campers and as people without harming the land.  Green River Preserve strives to teach personal responsibility, ecological respect and respect for others through an adherence to the “Woodcraft Laws” originally written by Ernest Thompson Seaton, a founder of the Boy Scouts of America.  When summed up, these laws, love, truth, beauty, and fortitude define respect.
Camps hire staff based on their maturity, sensitivity, intellectual achievement, and integrity.  They exemplify the role models we aspire to have for our children today.

Upon selection, they are carefully trained to ensure all campers get the rich PA270016and rewarding experience they should expect from camp.  Through their staff, camps promote independence and encourage confidence in our children. Children feel prepared for the future and are not afraid to be leaders.  Camp is a great opportunity for character education.  The school drop out rate in America is 30%.  About 70% of those who drop out end up in jail.  A camp counselor provides inspiration for children.  They are real life heroes who teach children to do the right thing even if no one is looking and that it takes courage to be who you are.  Success in a camp is sending a child home a little better than they came.  Parent testimonies continue to support this.

“Thank you for providing a place of truth and beauty, a place where young people know their truest, best self.   How many lives have been changed by that experience?  I know our son’s has and our family’s life has been transformed by GRP.  Thank you dear, friends, for giving our son a place where he learned something that gives him peace today:  knowing who God wants him to be at his very best.”  -  A GRP camper parent

(Part VI will be posted next week.)

New Staff Members

We would like welcome back to Green River Preserve, our daughter, Anne Izard, and her husband, Stephen Mead as our new directors of our education and school programs, expeditions and the farm. Both Anne and Steve come to GRP with many years of experience in environmental education and related programs.

Anne grew up in Charleston, SC and is a graduate of Ashley Hall. She earned her BS in Science from Sewanee, The University of the South in Natural Resources with an emphasis in geology and forestry. Following Sewanee, she spent a year at The Teton Science School in Wyoming as part of her graduate studies and graduated from the University of Idaho with an MS in Environmental Education and Conservation. Anne has worked at Green River over the years at summer camp and the school programs as a counselor, expedition leader, mentor and program director. She returns to us from Silverton, Colorado where she was Director of Education for the Mountain Studies Institute in Durango, Colorado.

Steve is a native of Boston and a graduate of the University of Vermont with a BS in environmental studies with an emphasis in forestry. During the time Anne was in graduate school, Steve served as the project manager for the University of Idaho’s AmeriCorps program directing a stream restoration study. For seven years, he has also served as a forest fire fighter and forester based out of Durango, Colorado.

Both Anne and Steve have a genuine love for the environment and children. They are very excited about being a part of Green River Preserve’s administrative team.

GRP Staff in Ecuador

Four GRP staff went on their own expedition this winter. Pam Ritchie, Rachel Brett, Bob Davis, and Ben Nelson went south to Ecuador, where they explored small towns, climbed huge, still-active volcanoes, and canoed through the rain forest.

Of course, as GRP staff, they managed to turn much of their trip into an extra-long and somewhat unusual mentor hike, learning new uses of

tropical plants and searching for incredible wildlife–from monkeys to caiman to toucans to anacondas. Although those who tasted the local delicacy of guinea pig are sorry to report that they did have some ort that night, for the most part they stuck to their Green River roots, even translating one of Bob’s stories into Spanish.

Now that they are back, they can only imagine what campers, and their parents, would think if our hikes at GRP climbed up smoking, spitting volcanoes–and what a good geology lesson that would make.
