For close to a decade, Anne and Stephen Mead, GRP Assistant Directors, have lived in various places out west. They fell in love with the southwestern part of Colorado, particularly the San Juan Mountains, and decided to settle in Silverton, Colorado. Soon after settling there, they began dreaming of an expedition experience that would bring campers to these amazing mountains. Dreams do come true and here it is: GRP’s Western Expedition.
Based in the historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado (elevation 9,318’), the Western Expedition will start with a three day backpacking trip in a nearby high mesa. This will allow for the acclimatization process beginning at elevations of 5 to 7 thousand feet. Following this, campers will embark on a 10 to 14 day backpacking trip in the mighty San Juan Mountains. The expedition will conclude with a 2 to 3 day river trip on a river fed by these mountains. Similar to Blue Ridge Expeditions, campers will have direct input in route choice; a process we believe gives them ownership and training in the expedition experience. Due to elevation as well as topography, the western trip will be more strenuous than other expeditions. (To see a short video of the area visit this link and choose Episode 2.)
Designed for rising11th – 12th graders, the Western Expedition will provide an incredible opportunity for further development of outdoor skills. This expedition in conjunction with the new Trail Blazers Expedition completes a program that will feed GRP with great counselors and mentor for years to come.
Departure and Arrival for WXP will be Albuquerque, New Mexico Airport. Arrival is Thursday 6/20 from 12-4PM. Departure is Wednesday 7/10 from 10 AM to 2 PM.
