Green River Preserve – At a Glance

You’ll discover a different kind of summer camp when you discover Green River Preserve. What could be a better backdrop for the summer than a 3,400-acre private wildlife preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina?

Campers jumping into Fawn Lake

Green River Preserve is a summer camp where a community of curious and creative children and talented staff connect with the joy of nature. We are an American Camp Association accredited co-ed camp for rising 2nd through 12th graders. Each session is limted to 104 campers with a 1 to 3 staff to camper ratio. Our staff and naturalists bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and talent to the camp and we see children’s lives enhanced every single day.

By participating in non-competitive, yet challenging activities, campers find they are free to be themselves, or as our t-shirts say “I’m my best me at GRP!” Built on a foundation of respect, Green River Preserve nurtures the heart, develops the mind, and strengthens character. Campers leave with a sense of wonder, appreciation and respect for the natural world.

What Parents Are Saying About Green River Preserve:

This camp focuses so beautifully on the natural world and our interactions within it. I grew up going to summer camps and this one breaks the mold of traditional camps that run campers between activities at 60 minute intervals in a relatively structured environment. Here, campers go on daily three hour morning hikes with naturalists on the vast and varied property here that borders the DuPont State Forest. Lunchtime reports tell of wildlife spotted (wild turkeys, salamanders, hawks, snakes, bears, butterflies, etc..), edible plants and wild fruits tasted, geocaches found, and artifacts from ancient peoples uncovered. The children are engaged with the outdoors fully and are so excited to report on their adventures. There is also an active camp farm utilizing sustainable techniques and providing the kitchen with produce for the camp community during the summer. From composting to respect circles to non-competitive camp-wide evening games to gregarious sing-a-longs and birds of the day, this camp leaves nothing behind in its mission to challenge creative children to continue on their exploration of  their surroundings and reflect on those explorations.

Just wanted to let you know what a life changing experience my son had at camp.  He talked the entire 3 hours back home about all the wonderful things he had done during the week. This is a kid who barely tells me what a day at school is like. He played his cane flute for me. We listened to the flute CD he received at camp, and he told me what each song was called. He went over the specifics of each GLP, and he has his next 3 years of GRP camps and expeditions planned out. Thank you GRP for making a dream come true for my son that he didn’t even know he had.

The site is so much like my vision of the ideal summer camp and the friendliness and helpfulness of EVERY staff member was remarkable. Our arrival was the nicest reception to camp I’ve EVER experienced (and I have 4 kids who’ve been going to summer camps for 12 years).

Your camp sent all the right messages to the children. Respect for nature and themselves! I have been and continue to be impressed with your camp, counselors and the amazing messages you leave with our children that make an imprint for a lifetime.
