School Programs
The Green River Preserve offers two interdisciplinary courses of study based upon two books. The flagship program is based upon the book The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter. GRP has a pre-designed curriculum to provide to schools for this program. The other book is Crow & Weasel by Barry Lopez. With this book students explore the meaning of the "Woodcraft Laws", which are integral to GRP. Schools are encouraged to read and study with the books prior to their visit to GRP. During their visit, the students are exposed to aspects of science, art and culture of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains and the mountain people through hikes with mentor naturalists in the morning and in the afternoon. The integration of the interdisciplinary unit with GRP's hands-on field trip exerience gives students a profound understanding of three basic themes: cultural heritage, ecological respect, stewardship, and interconnectedness within nature and between human beings and nature.
GRP can also customize programs to meet the needs of your school. Please Contact us to learn more about our school programs!
