Counselor

Essential Requirements:

  • Must be 19 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Demonstrate a desire and ability to learn and be taught about environmental  stewardship
  • Be physically able and willing to maintain constant supervision of campers and to fulfill all responsibilities fully.
  • Be patient, energetic, fun-loving, and hard-working – and a sense of humor doesn’t hurt!
  • Maintain a positive and appropriate attitude as well as highest morale character around children and staff at all times
  • Be willing and able to put the needs of others before your own.
  • Be flexible and able to work well with others, maintain open and effective communication.
  • A counselor is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week only excluding session breaks. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Participate in pre-camp staff training. Become familiar with and implement camp policies, procedures, and philosophy as stated in the GRP Summer Camp Staff Manual, and learn the role of the camp counselor.
  • BE ON TIME for all on duty shifts and meetings. This is a sign of respect for the people you are working with.
  • Assume full responsibility for and supervision of up to 7 campers each session.
  • Prepare for the arrival of each camper by reading their folders thoroughly, including all information forms, medical information, and behavior plans; discuss each camper with supervisory staff and/or consultants as needed.
  • Prepare a list of any questions about information that is unclear.
  • Greet parents and  when they arrive on Opening Day. Answer any questions they have about camp or direct them to a director. Remember that you are representing camp and act accordingly. Make parents comfortable leaving their child with you.
  • Provide appropriate supervision and instruction to each camper in all settings and activities. Let an Activity Director know if you need assistance.
  • PARTICIPATE in all activities with your camper. Encourage and facilitate your camper’s participation in all activities by implementing appropriate strategies, such as visual structure and reinforcements.
  • Monitor and report any health and/or medical concerns to an Activity Director (i.e. scratches, ticks, first aid needs, etc).
  • Meet parents/care providers on Closing Days and discuss their camper’s week with them. Assure that ALL of the camper’s belongings are returned to the parents.
  • Perform assigned activity and night duty responsibilities.
  • Be able to lead an overnight camping trip with your cabin each session
  • Write a “parent letter” to each of your campers’ parents
  • Attend and participate in all meetings. Keep supervisory staff informed of any situations.
  • Follow all policies and guidelines as explained in the GRP Summer Camp Staff Manual.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all areas of camp utilized by camp staff. Complete assigned cleaning jobs before leaving on breaks.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

Mentor

Essential Requirements:

  • Must be a college graduate or has equivalent life experience in this role must have passion, expertise, and experience in teaching/instructing in an outdoor environment
  • Demonstrate a desire and ability to learn and be taught about environmental stewardship
  • A background in natural resources or environmental science/education is preferred, but not necessary. Responsibilities include leading daily  field studies on the preserve, leading or assisting in afternoon activities, coordinating evening programs, and leading Group Learning Projects
  • Be physically able and willing to maintain constant supervision of campers and to fulfill all responsibilities fully.
  • Advanced First Aid or Outdoor Rescue certifications preferred but not required
  • Be patient, energetic, fun-loving, and hard-working – and a sense of humor doesn’t hurt!
  • Expertise in time management, experience planning a schedule and working out logistics
  • Maintain a positive and appropriate attitude as well as highest morale character around children and staff at all times
  • Be willing to not only be a mentor to campers but to counselors as well.  You will set the standard for camp staff.
  • Be willing and able to put the needs of others before your own.
  • Be flexible and able to work well with others, maintain open and effective communication.

Activity Coordinators

  • Summer activity coordinators: 4 days a week, 10:00 am to 6:00 PM
  • Morning lesson planning and afternoon teaching for three, 50 minute activity periods. There will be at least one counselor assistant per activity period.
  • Resident Coordinators will be assigned other duties in addition to their activity area.
  • Resident employees receive room and board as part of their employment package.
  • Commuter employees receive meals in camp dining hall.
  • Responsibilities included in all areas: Maintaining activity area, ordering activity supplies, organizing and making lesson plans, and teaching 3 activity areas a day.
  • Coordinating and leading a Group Learning Project Day.

Pottery: Summer commuter or resident position: The pottery studio coordinator will plan and organize a summer pottery program. Additional responsibilities include organizing with other arts coordinators closing day camper exhibits.

Arts and Crafts: Summer commuter or resident position: The arts and crafts coordinator will plan and organize a summer arts and crafts program to include a variety of media such as basket weaving, beading, paper making, book/journal making, leather crafts, knitting, sewing, weaving, and various other areas of crafts. Additional responsibilities include organizing with other arts coordinators closing day camper exhibits.

Painting and Drawing: Summer commuter or resident position: The painting and drawing coordinator will plan and organize a summer painting and drawing program to include a variety of painting and drawing media such as watercolors, acrylic, oil, pastels, charcoal, conte crayon, pencil, colored pencil, and pen and ink. Additional responsibilities include organizing with other arts coordinators closing day camper exhibits.

Creative Writing: Summer position: The creative writing coordinator will plan and organize a summer creative writing program to include a variety of creative writing projects such as poetry, playwriting, short stories, song writing, camp newspaper and various other creative writing projects. May be paired with a mentor position.

Music: Summer resident position; possible full season: The music coordinator will organize, plan, and lead the musical aspects of summer camp to include: opening and closing day music, mealtime blessings and singing, campfire singing, bus singing, evening programs, music classes (guitar, drumming, various instruments), group learning projects. Help train staff during staff training in camp songs. Update camp songbook. Organize camp musical instruments. Coordinate with theatre instructors for programs. Position may include other camp duties.

Pioneer Cabin: Summer or full season/ commuter or resident: The Pioneer Cabin coordinator will organize and plan a variety of Pioneer cabin programs such as Primitive Appalachian crafts and skills, cordage, fiber crafts (spinning and natural yarn dying), candle making, stone carving, gourd crafts, leather crafts, beeswax balm, preserves and jams, wood stove cooking, ground oven baking, making apple cider, butter, herb teas, medicinal and edible plants. May be paired with a mentor position.

Wood working/wood burning: Full Season/commuter: The wood working/wood burning coordinator will organize and plan a variety of wood working programs to include a variety of projects such as bird houses, walking sticks, wooden book covers, wood- burned gourd crafts, and various other wood working projects. May be paired with a mentor position.

Climbing Tower: Full Season/commuter or residential: The climbing tower coordinator must be a certified AMGA (American Mountain Guide Association) Climbing Wall Instructor and have an experienced background in maintaining and running a climbing wall/tower program and low challenge course. Other duties include training staff who work in these activity areas, equipment maintenance, and safety protocol. This activity area coordinates with the Pioneer Cabin and wood working during the one week summer camp sessions and school programs. It is a regular activity during the two and three week programs and for Group Learning Project days.

Waterfront: Summer and partial Fall Season: The waterfront coordinator must be a certified American Red Cross Life Guard with Waterfront Module. Additional Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is recommended, but not required. Responsibilities include training staff who work in this activity area, equipment and waterfront maintenance, and safety protocol.

Campout Coordinator: Summer resident position: The summer campout coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the base camp camping program to include: Leave no Trace camping ethics, training staff in all areas of low impact camping, maintenance, storage, and inventory of all camping equipment. Campout logistics including pack out meals, campout planning, radio duty, clean up. The campout coordinator is expected to be on duty 24/7 during all base camp campout weekends. Must be a college graduate or have equivalent life experience. Wilderness First Aid certification or advanced wilderness medical certifications preferred. Leave no Trace certification or low impact/environmental stewardship certifications preferred.

Photography and web assistant: Summer resident or commuter position/internship: The summer photography and web assistant assists the media specialist with summer photography and web needs to include daily camp photo opportunities and web uploads; camp blog; designing and creating a summer photo memory book for campers; creating a summer photo scrapbook for camp archives; creating summer slide shows for off season marketing; parent website communication. This position may also include assisting in summer program office and other areas related to media as needed.

Farm Intern: Commuter or resident/ Seasonal position/internship: The summer farm intern assists the camp farm managers in the following areas:

  • All camp farm maintenance of Heatherly field, Hemlock field, camp garden, and orchards.
  • Management of camp animals: chickens, goats, rabbits, bee keeping
  • Management of camp Worm World located at camp farm/Heatherly location
  • Farm to table program
  • Ort and compost program
  • Counselor workers
  • Farm mentor hikes and Group Learning Project Days

Office Assistant, Office Mom

The camp office assistant, affectionately, Office Mom, may work by the camp session or the full summer. The Office Mom lives on property and serves as the office assistant during camp. Duties include answering the phone, radio duty, emails, daily mail/packages/camper trunks, and assisting the camp administrator in other areas as needed.

Camp Nurse/Doctor

Camp medical personnel may work by the camp session or the full summer. Medical employees live in the camp Wellness Center (Infirmary), a charming two story cottage with a big, rocking chair porch. All camp medical personnel must be licensed in North Carolina; nurses (RN), nurse practitioners, doctors. Most out of state licenses are accepted by NC and do not take long to obtain.

Kitchen Staff

Summer or Full Season, commuter position. Positions available for shift lead cooks, prep cooks, and dishwashers. Previous camp or school kitchen experience desired, but not necessary.

 

 

Expeditions

 

Expeditions Leader

Full summer resident position. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, possess a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) or WFA (Wilderness First Aid) (WFR preferred), have a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record, CPR certification, previous successful experience working with teenagers and leading outdoor trips, and three professional references (family members and friends are not acceptable). Additional certifications such as lifeguarding and swift water rescue are preferred. Green River Preserve offers three different expedition programs: Blue Ridge Expeditions (BRX), Outer Banks Expeditions (OBX), and Trail Blazers Expeditions (TBX). Each trip focuses on community building and helping campers become independent leaders while learning about their natural resources. BRX is based near Green River Preserve base camp where campers learn primitive skills and crafts, while backpacking, rock climbing, and river canoeing. Applicants proficient in white water skills, rock climbing, and backpack orienteering are highly preferable for this expedition. OBX is based out of Beaufort, N.C. and involves kayaking and camping at campgrounds as well as remote sites. The program transitions from black water to the sea and culminates in a kayaking trip along the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Applicants with previous sea kayaking experience are preferred. Our newest expedition, TBX, will be based on the Green River Preserve and is a leadership, trail building expedition for rising seniors in high school and rising freshmen in college. Leaders for this expedition should possess knowledge in trail construction, backpack orienteering, and leadership training.

Staff Training: All staff must participate in a pre-camp staff training; become familiar with and implement camp policies, procedures, and philosophy as stated in the camp staff manual. All staff must be CPR and First Aid certified; offered during staff training for those not certified.
