GRP Farm
The farm is located on 1 1/2 acres of Green River bottomlands. Under the farm manager’s guidance, campers plant, harvest, wash, weigh and pack the vegetables. Harvested veggies are brought to the camp dining hall to be enjoyed at mealtimes. In 2011 the GRP farm included an abundance of snow peas, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, all kinds of squashes, gourds, beets, lettuce, radishes, kale, strawberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, green beans, sunflowers, an herb garden, an more! It was a fantastic season with over 3,000 pounds of produce gathered!
Other fun activities at the farm include worm farming and harvesting – a neat experiment used to help fertilize the soil – beehives and honey making, and laying chickens! We also installed a small hoop house in the spring of 2011 to help “jump start” our planting season. Campers were able to transplant veggie “starts” from the hoop house throughout the summer. All in all the farm was an incredible success!
