Session Descriptions
Mini Camp Session
Mini Camp Session is a five day session designed for rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. The schedule is similiar to the Day at the Preserve, but modified to meet the needs of younger campers (Lights out is at 9:00pm). Special emphasis is placed on nurturing and individual attention, for first-time campers. This five-day session is an excellent confidence builder and introduction to summer camp.
One Week Session
The one week session is designed for rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders. This session has the same daily schedule as the two week sessions but is less strenuous and features a one night camping trip. This program is great for first time campers as well as campers who are not ready to spend two weeks away from home.
Two Week Session
The two week sessions are offered for rising 5th through 8th graders. These sessions offer a good balance of morning mentor hikes, up to 24 elective afternoon activities, and a variety of evening programs including camp-wide games of capture the flag and camp fires with story telling and singing. Also featured is a three day-two night camping trip and a full day "Group Learning Project" where campers choose from a variety of day-long adventures, such as fly fishing, rock climbing, crafts, and pioneer cooking.
Three Week Session
The three week session is the pinnacle of the Green River experience. It is highly recommended for rising 7th through 9th graders. This session is extremely popular for the friendships that blossom and the special bonding that happens among campers and staff. Extra time is given to wilderness adventure, skills development, exploring The Preserve, the DuPont State Forest and other neighboring lands. There is also more time for elective overnight camping, advanced afternoon activities, special group games, and cabin night activities. Campers leave this session appreciating their own inner growth and maturity. This self-awareness is charged with a deeper sense of peace and skills accomplishment. The three-week session is truly a unique experience for those searching for a place within a close-knit community of bright, young nature enthusiasts who "seek the joy of being alive".
Once you have registered for camp we will send you a Parent/Camper Information Packet. However, some information can be found below or on our Files and Forms page.
Travel Options
Please check out our Directions page for more information on travel options. Arrangements can be made to pick campers up at the airport, if needed.
Payment Schedule
We will reserve space for your child based on availability, application arrival dates, acceptance into the program, and timely tuition payments.
Camp Store Fees
Campers can "charge" purchases against their credit line. Parents set the credit line amount as part of the check-in process on opening day. The recommended camp store credit line of $30.00 per week is assigned to campers whenever parents are unavailable or do not make their wishes known. Campers should not bring cash to camp. Please pay the camp store account when picking up your camper.
Medical Fees and Health Certificate
Parents are responsible for all camper medical fees. Any medical bills incurred during the program will be billed, whenever possible, directly to the parent's insurance carrier. A medical form and proof of health and accident insurance coverage are required for admission. A camp nurse or one of the directors will communicate with parents by phone in the event of significant illness or injury.
Packages and Mail at Camp
All campers love to receive mail from family and friends, so write often! Campers are encouraged to write home at least once per session. Each session our counselors send a letter to parents about their camper. We ask you not to send commercial packages to your camper. It can lead to unintended competition within the cabin group and sometimes even hurt feelings. Please limit packages to basic necessities for camp and reading books. Packages of food will be held until the end of each session. Food in our cabins attracts critters.
Camper's Name
The Green River Preserve
301 Green River Road
Cedar Mountain, NC 28718
Our email policy is an extension of our effort to slow our campers down. While emails are convenient for parents, too many eamils lead to homesickness, so we ask that you please use snail mail. We welcome emails to us regarding your camper. Email us
Visitation Policy and Phone Calls
When a camper leaves home, he or she needs to be allowed the space to develop his or her own personality. Therefore, we discourage phone and visitation interruptions from parents or relatives during the camp session. Our office gladly accepts phone calls from parents interested in their child's progress at camp. We can arrange for your child's counselor to call you with a "progress report". Children should not be called during a session except in the case of an emergency.
Birthdays at Camp
We feel that birthdays are very special, and we will enjoy celebrating them with your child. Homemade goodies are prepared by our cooks, so please do not send baked goods or sweets. Counselors will enjoy decorating with balloons, crepe paper, etc. We welcome any additional table or cabin decorations.
Cabin Assignments
Cabin groups are determined according to age and grade level to insure compatible levels of maturity. Please let us know if your child has a cabin mate preference. We can not guarentee that your child will be placed in the same cabin with his or her preference(s), however, we will try to honor special requests. Please try to limit your requests to one other person. The directors reserve the right to make the final decisions on cabin assignments.
What to Pack
We play a lot at Green River. We will get wet and dirty. Sometimes it is hot; sometimes it gets cool, even cold. We want our campers to be comfortable and equipped to meet Mother Nature head on. We recommend bringing durable and inexpensive clothes. A packing list will be provided in the Parent/Camper Handbook.
Laundry
A professional cleaner provides laundry service once a week. Nevertheless, clothes are sometimes stained or lost. Please do not send to camp new or valuable clothes, or clothes that will bleed. Laundry fees are included in the tuition.
